Family Days out in Leeds

Leeds, in West Yorkshire, is a lively, buzzing city and a popular destination for city breaks in the UK. It’s also a fabulous place for a holiday with the children, with numerous budget hotels in Leeds city centre, family-friendly restaurants galore and lots of child-friendly activities.  But as the cost of family city breaks can soon add up, here are our top five fun things to do for the whole family in Leeds, all of which come in at under £10 per person.

Tropical World, Roundhay Park

 From the Desert House to the Amazon Tank, Tropical World has the second largest collection of tropical plants in the UK (second only to Kew Gardens). Welcoming over a million visitors a year, Tropical World can be found in Roundhay Park in the very heart of Leeds City Centre.

 Kids will love meeting the meerkats, lizards, mice and snakes, whilst even the youngest babies will enjoy watching the butterflies fluttering around the Butterfly Garden and the colourful tropical fish within the Amazon Tank. Tropical World is open every day from 10am-6pm in summer and 10am-4pm in winter. Entrance Fees are £3.30 for Adults and £2.20 for children (under-fives are free).

 Entrance to Roundhay Park itself is free, with 700 acres of parkland for the children to run around burn off plenty of excess energy!

LittleLegz Indoor Play Centre

 The perfect destination for children to run around on wet and windy days, Littlelegz is a great Indoor Adventure Play Centre based in South Leeds. With a cool rope bridge, high play frame, rollers and sensory areas, there is tons of fun for children of all ages. There’s a dedicated soft play area for babies and toddlers and a sports area for older children.

 As well as being brilliant for the kids, adults will love the restaurant and coffee shop areas, complete with free wi-fi. The LittleLegz Play Centre can be found just off of the Dewsbury Road.

The centre is open Mon-Fri, 9am-7pm (6 pm in school holidays) and weekends,10am-6pm. Admission prices are: Under 1 year old £1; 1-3 years £4; 4 years and over £4.50.

Leeds City Museum

 At Leeds City Museum you can come face-to-face with a tiger, dig for fossils and see a real-life mummy. With four floors of exhibitions, there is enough to see and do for visitors of all ages – indeed it is suggested that you dedicate at least two hours for your visit to this museum.

There are loads of fun, interactive and hands-on activities that parents will enjoy just as much as the children. The Leeds City Museum is situated within Millennium Square in the city centre.

Opening times are: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 am – 5 pm; Thursday 10am-7pm and weekends 11am-5pm. It is closed on Monday and admission is free.

 

Leeds Royal Armouries

 Leeds Royal Armouries is another great historical day out. The museum has special events including jousting knights and falconry displays, as well as 70,000 displays of arms and artillery permanently on display, from early history right up to the present day.

Mostly, events and shows run at the weekend, but the museum itself is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free, although some events may be chargeable.]

Kirkstall Abbey

Oh isn’t Kirkstall Abbey just lovely and kids love ruins don’t they? It just absolutely fires up their imagination!  It is over 500 years old and full of history. Guided tours are available but sometimes it is just fun to be free to explore

Middleton Railway

 Perfect for railway enthusiasts and Thomas the Tank Engine fans, Middleton Railway is the ideal family day out. The Middleton Railway is situated around two miles from the centre of Leeds and runs a diesel service every Saturday from 1 pm and a steam service every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from 11 am.

Special events run throughout the year, for instance, Christmas and Halloween. The engine house is open from 10 am on operating days.

Return tickets cost £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children. The journey takes around 25 minutes and a return ticket includes entrance to the Engine House and unlimited travel on the day of issue.
