  1. reduce pestering

ways to stop your child pestering you in shops

  1. Don’t give in to pester power…not ever, not once. Or you will get it again and again and again. Once a child knows something works….
  2. From the start if your child likes to collect things like stickers in books only let it be one thing at a time. Be very clear about when and how they get their stickers. It can get to the point where every co-op checkout is a minefield of negotiation.
  3. Don’t take your child shopping if at all possible. It’s not much fun for kids and it is so much easier without them!
  4. Give your child a job to do whilst you are in a shop whether it is holding the shopping list, finding something specific. Keeping a running total of what you spend or even pushing their dolly. No matter what their age kids can pester. Distract them
  5. Tell your child before you go into a shop what you intend to buy. Tell them no sweets/magazines etc. if that’s what they are likely to ask for you then don’t need to have that conversation once in the shop (though you probably will.)

Good luck!

Oh and if they start pestering you about Christmas anytime soon tell them to write it down because your memory is rubbish. It’s great handwriting practice. If they can’t yet write tell them to whisper it to their toys who’ll pass it on to Santa. Should keep them busy

They’re good tips! It always seems to cost me a fortune when I take the kids! I’m sure an online shop is cheaper, even though I pay for the delivery, I can concentrate on getting what I actually need and not come out both poorer and more stressed!

I agree and you don’t get swayed by what you see either HOWEVER you also don’t see your trolley filling up!

I like suggestion number 3 best, don’t take the children. Could include a sneaky coffee too.

I always give my little girl something to hold while going round the supermarket… works a treat! Recently though she wants to hold the one thing I don’t want her too… eggs for example!! x

If they are fussing for toys, books etc , Tell them to put it on their christmas list, it works a treat for my 4 year old, but not so great for my 10 year old :O

This is so true, I try to do online shopping if I can. With kids and Hubby our bill increased by about 20%. Great site by the way 🙂

Hi! I agree with number 3: try not to take your child with you! but when there’s no one else to look after the kids, it’s tricky, no?
    Thanks for this post!

Good tips! I have two boys – I find another good thing to do is to take snacks/drinks with you into the supermarket, (healthier versions of the ones they’re prob going to ask for!) and then bring them out at the right moment. Saves money!! Snacks are also a good thing to keep them occupied for a bit.

Hi – these tips are vital and all parents should follow them, there are far too many precious spoilt children around and it doesn’t do them any good – had a scan back through your blog – lovely!
