Tips on how to redecorate your home on a budget
One of the best ways to lift your spirits during the long wait for those lazy, hazy days of summer to finally show up is to review how you might lighten and brighten your home environment, even if you can’t redesign the weather!
If the décor is looking a little sad, or you are just in the mood for change and would like to redecorate, don’t assume that it will cost you a fortune. There are plenty of clever ideas for how to redecorate your home on a budget. Firstly, establish how much you have available to spend, and then decide which rooms are most in need of a new look. And whilst you’re about it, make sure that your home insurance is up-to-date, and that your house or flat and contents are fully protected. Allianz Your Cover offer a flexible package that is perfect for those wanting to design insurance cover that will suit their lifestyle and home environment.
So to get you started and inspire you here are five top tips on how to redecorate your home on a budget:
(1) Think colour.
An ageing three-piece suite or a living room can be transformed with clever use of materials and fabrics. Use brightly coloured throws, scatter cushions, and giant cushions with bold geometric patterns to provide extra seating in a window bay. Jazz up windows with full-length sheer curtains in summer colours, and run a touch of colour along the edges of shelves and skirting-boards.
(2) Use accessories.
Plants can transform the look and feel of a room, from a living room to a bathroom. Graceful ferns falling from a high shelf, an attractive table display using elegant orchids surrounded by decorative stones …take a look round your local garden centre to get lots of ideas for how to use indoor plants to revive your décor. Collect unusual pieces, from beachcombed driftwood shapes to a retro chandelier from a flea-market, to decorate your living-room.
(3) Shop clever:
More and more people are choosing to buy furniture second-hand, and there are some real finds to be picked up if you know where to look. Try your local free advertiser or charity shops for the chance of picking up a real bargain if you prepared for some DIY to mend or recover second-hand furniture. The tip is to choose pieces that are good quality but perhaps in need of some tlc. That way you know that your restoration efforts will be worth it.
(4) Create change with small touches:
you don’t have to repaint an entire room to refresh the overall colour-scheme. Just as rewarding can be repainting wooden dining chairs or a dresser, and experimenting with paint effects like distressing to give that interesting antique pastoral look to wood. Redesign your lighting to create areas of soft colour and focus in a room, and provide a totally different atmosphere.
(5) Plan your painting scheme:
f you are working to a tight budget but are keen to repaint some of your living space, then be prepared to do much of the work yourself. If you recruit friends to help you it can be fun! To make sure that you don’t splash out on paint that turns out to be not the right colour, use testers to try out different colour schemes, and research the best value paint for the area that you are planning to paint. Colour wheels are a great idea for experimenting with different shades and combinations before you finally decide on your new décor.
