There comes a point with every car when you realise it might be time to move on and upgrade. 

You don’t want to leave it too late either – you could find yourself broken down at the side of the road with an irreparable vehicle or settling for something new that doesn’t quite fit the bill because you need it in a rush.

Increasing insurance 

As your car gets older, it’s more likely that it’ll break down. Newer models may also be fitted with improved safety technology, meaning your vehicle is seen as a greater liability by insurers. 

If you start finding it hard to get cheap quotes or notice that you aren’t being offered the sort of deals you used to get, it might be time to chop it in for something else. 

You’ll then be able to find a car insurance premium that’s far more in line with what you expect and can afford to pay. 

 

Frequent repairs 

When you have a new car, everything seems to run smoothly and efficiently. But as it gets older, things start to go awry and more trips to the garage are needed. 

Frequent issues will regularly see you needing to shell out hundreds of pounds for fixes – particularly if you don’t have a warranty plan. 

There comes a point where you have to weigh up whether the car is worth continuing to sink money into. If the resale value is low, it could well be time to move on and put the money you’d spend on repairs towards a new model. 

 

Feeling unsafe 

There were an estimated 119,850 casualties in road traffic accidents in Great Britain in the year ending June 2021. 

It’s always important to feel safe in the car you’re driving, so keep an eye out for vibrations through the steering wheel and any difficulties when braking or manoeuvring.

Outdated tech 

The technology included in new cars keeps improving. Many new models offer a series of driver assist features, like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and so much more.

While there’s nothing wrong with relying solely on your own wits when you’re at the wheel, if you’re regularly driving with passengers or your family you find extra comfort in the support that’s now available.
