Guest post – Homemade gifts: thoughtful or stingy?
Homemade gifts can be a great way of showing someone you care without breaking the bank. But do people really appreciate them? It seems to be that we live in a world where the amount of money spent on a gift is almost a symbol of how much we care, when surely the thought and consideration should be the most important thing. The time and effort which goes into making a homemade gift can provide a much more meaningful gesture and save you a little money on top!
If you have a creative flair, you could try making your own birthday cards. If you’re stuck for ideas, you can find lots of inspiration online. While you can buy your materials from craft shops, it’s easy to make a handmade card simply using odds and ends you have in the house. Old wrapping paper, buttons, beads and fabric make great decoration and you’ll end up with a much more personal card.
Homemade gifts: thoughtful or stingy? – What do you think?
If you are a wizard in the kitchen, use this to your advantage! No one can say no to a little home-baking. Pretty cupcakes or your handmade truffles can be a great option, especially if presented in a nice gift box with a bit of ribbon. Again, most of the ingredients are things which you probably already have in the pantry and hopefully your creation will turn out better than anything you could buy in the supermarket!
Of course, not everyone has the time for baking or arts and crafts. If you want an idea that’s quick and straightforward just fill a photograph album with photos of all the happy moments you and your recipient have shared. With any luck you’ll create a gift that will last longer than a box of chocolates. Being able to reflect back on happy memories is a great way of celebrating an important milestone such as a birthday or anniversary.
If you are certain that your homemade gift is something that your recipient will enjoy and use, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make the gift yourself. It’s a great opportunity to get a little creative and can be a lot more fun than trailing around the shops. Hopefully your recipient will appreciate the sentiment and cherish your gift knowing the time and effort that went into it!
