We all wear underwear, but it’s not often something that is talked about in the same way as dresses, skirts and jewellery. Over the years, it has become a piece of clothing that is out of sight and out of mind, which is highly disappointing. The truth is that underwear can go through trends and changes, just like the rest of your wardrobe, and so surely deserves the same attention!

In more recent times, women’s underwear has become a force to be reckoned with. As women are taking more ownership over their undergarments, there are clear trends emerging regarding what women love and what is falling by the wayside.

So, with all that in mind, here are some of the upcoming underwear trends for 2020.

 

High rise underwear trends in 2020

There have been a number of trend shifts in women’s fashion over the years, but underwear has seen a clear move from one style to another. Boy shorts were long a favourite for their comfort and versatility, but perhaps weren’t keeping up with other styles at the same pace.

Now, buying habits have shifted from traditional boy shorts to more retro fits, offering something a little different for your lingerie drawer. High-waisted underwear has become more and more popular, thanks to its flattering silhouette. High rise styles including briefs and thongs have given new life to classic designs, proving that you can have both style and comfort in one.

 

High leg underwear

In the theme of everything becoming ‘higher’, the high leg brief is also hugely popular and will continue in that fashion. Reminiscent of 1980s icons like Cindy Crawford and Jane Fonda, high-cut briefs might look like big knickers on first glance, but they feature a flattering cutaway design at the leg.

They first appeared as a trend back in 2019, and have been so well-received that they’ll be sticking around for another year at least. Combining essential comfort with a sexy edge, this sits perfectly in line with high-waisted jeans that have dominated the fashion industry for years.

 

Underwear as outerwear

This was a trend last seen in the 00s and even 90s; think thongs visible above jeans. However, while this doesn’t sound like a trend that should return, it has done so but in a much more grown-up way.

This has likely evolved from the huge increase in bodysuits, which already give a lingerie vibe to your outfits. Styles like harnesses and garter waist belts are becoming more readily acceptable worn outside of your clothes. Similarly, you will likely see negligee-inspired slip dresses more frequently as the weather continues to improve!
