How to extend the life of your wardrobe

Fashions come and go and If we try and keep pace with them by buying new every season we can end up seriously out of pocket.

As a budget conscious person, I am acutely aware of the transience of fashion and how this can impact finances in a really negative way.

As a clothes lover though, I don’t want to reject fashion trends outright and I like to keep up with new styles and embrace the new seasons.

I believe the key is to extend the life of the wardrobe you already have.

How to extend the life of your wardrobe

Here are 5 tips on how you can do that

Accessorise well

Scarves to match the season and the colours currently en vogue can really transform an outfit. Brooches can alter the look of an outfit dramatically and really jazz up an item you may be bored with. Belts can have a similar impact but I just love a stylish brooch follow

Red is a big colour this season and rather than splashing out on all things red, accessorising with a beautiful brooch like this would make a white shirt look totally on trend wouldn’t it?

Take care of your clothes

To keep your wardrobe looking good you don’t have to keep refreshing it instead you need to take care of it. Mending buttons and tears as soon as they require it is crucial and if you aren’t handy a local tailor will be really useful. Dry cleaning where required and keeping clothes ironed and sweet smelling are also key to keeping your wardrobe looking good.

Move with the times

Sometimes our body shape changes and sometimes the trend in hemlines changes…we need to be able to move with the times. But, rather than splashing out on something new, alterations by someone handy with a needle might be all that is in order to keep your wardrobe fresh.

Mix it up

Just because you have always worn one item with another doesn’t mean you have too. Why not get all your clothes out of the wardrobe and have a go at mixing and matching items you wouldn’t normally wear together. You might be very pleasantly surprised at what works. This is a great way to extend the life of your wardrobe and give yourself a new look.

Buying Considerately is How to extend the life of your wardrobe

If you do buy something new consider charity shops and car boot sales for interesting, unique and good quality pieces that you may not find or be able to afford in the shops. Also really think about what you need to work with and enhance the clothes you already have rather than just buying something because you like it.

Shopping with this though in mind will keep you focussed and will help you make wardrobe enhancing decisions

It is absolutely possible to breathe new life into your wardrobe if you follow the guidelines above. Fashion can be fabulous and it doesn’t need to be either wasteful or expensive for you to keep up with the trends.
