Make Fall Fashion Functional

Since the new wave of fall fashion trends hit stores, I knew it would only be a matter of time before I cracked and bought a few new pieces. But this season I’m taking a new approach to wardrobe shopping and buying pieces that are not only fashionable, but functional as well. A multifaceted piece will allow me to sport it for seasons to come, making it well worth the investment.

Here are a few I’ve indulged in so far…

A Fashionable Backpack
Don’t get me wrong, I have my share of purses. But backpacks are just downright convenient, especially when you have kids. You can easily carry all of their things and yours around without the subsequent weight breaking your shoulder in the process. Plus, you don’t have to keep sliding the bag back up your arm each time you bend down to help someone tie their shoes. And, to top it off, backpacks have way more inner organisation than your average purse, meaning you won’t have to drop down to your knees with your bag in your lap just to be able to find your keys.

Don’t subject yourself to wearing your kids’ old backpacks. If you need inspiration on what’s “in” right now, check out the designer backpack collection from Lyst. Their listings come from multiple different designers, and it’s regularly updated with the newest looks.

Stylish Athleisure
Athleisure is a new style that combines fashionable attire with leisure clothing and athletic wear. Think fitted tops, workout pants, and sneakers—basically everything you wear while cleaning the house or while working out. This also means that those times you hit the store wearing yoga pants—with no intention of going to yoga—you were actually just taking advantage of a fashionable trend. So feel free to absolve yourself from any guilt next time!

The popularity of the new trend doesn’t mean you can get away with wearing a pair of old-school sweatpants. You can look at Elle’s compilation of hot athleisure styles to learn more about where the line is drawn between tragic and trendy.

Boots, Boots, and More Boots
If you’re looking for a universal shoe this fall, you can’t go wrong with an ankle boot—or “bootie,” if you prefer. I doubt there’s a shoe on this planet that’s as universal. This season, suede and leather (or faux leather) are very stylish, and they have been for years. The two fabrics have become fashion staples for booties, so investing in a quality pair of either will still prove to be a good decision for years to come.

E! Online recently covered the ankle boot trend, and they’re a great place to start for ideas on how to pair the boot with you own style additions.

Buying one item that you can use over and over again for multiple purposes is pretty much “Budgeting 101.” If you haven’t thought about taking the same approach with your wardrobe, the new wave of fall fashions gives you the perfect opportunity. So get out there and start shopping smart!
