Having just been hit particularly hard by the expenses of Christmas, the last thing I feel like doing right now is hitting the high street once again to spend yet more pennies.

Retail giant John Lewis has warned against mass sales such as the famed ‘Black Friday’ tradition, which has made its way across the pond from America. Despite the fact that sales were phenomenal the day after Thanksgiving – Amazon UK, for example, broke records – the Waitrose owner advised that such sales were “more challenging profitability-wise.”

But this doesn’t stop us from trying – with the 5am queues, huge red SALE signs and inevitably huge discounts, we could indeed be seeing a repeat of Black Friday. Grabbing yourself a bargain doesn’t have to be a bother however – with these handy tips you can still make the January sales work for you.

Go digital

One of the best ways to make the most of the January sales is to stay informed. With the advent of the digital age, there are a wealth of apps available to help you keep abreast of where and when to get the best discounts. For fashion and beauty promotions, for example, SalesGossip advises shoppers on the best discounts and which retailers have the stock they’re looking for. Shoppers can also ‘swipe’ what they like and dislike in order to better tailor offers to their individual needs.

Meanwhile, downloading RedLaser is perfect for the frugal shopper, who can use it to scan a product’s barcode to see how prices compares across the high street. Vouchercloud will also use your smartphone’s GPS to help advise shoppers of deals closest to you.

Know your discounts

If you’re not lucky enough to be blessed with a smartphone, or simply don’t have enough gigabyte space to accommodate another app – keep these retailers in mind for the biggest discounts this January.

The best by far are Boohoo and Urban Outfitters, both of which are offering discounts of up to 75 per cent. But that’s not all – Misguided and Very, Fearne Cotton’s famed brand, are also offering 60 per cent discounts. Make sure you’re aware of your discount codes too – Dorothy Perkins, for example, while currently offering half price goods, are also offering a further 15 per cent with the discount code DPDEL50 for orders over £50 – so beat those January blues and make sure you get shopping!
