Nostalgia vs Reality. Was Music Really Better When We Were Young?

Was Music Really Better When We Were Young? I was a young teen in the 1980’s. Think fluorescent legwarmers and matching fingerless gloves. Lots of hairspray.A time of Wham and and Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Bananarama. Big hair, pretty men and a lot of cheesy pop songs.

I had my first proper kids to Whitney Houstons Greatest Love of All with Oli from Germany. Lovely Oli.

I liked to think I dressed like Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan. Power ballads were HUGE and I knew every word. I thought I could sing like Bonnie Tyler!

Culture Club made my dad tut a lot and I thought they were radical!! I’m perhaps more concerned now that we went around singing Frankie goes to Hollywood lyrics not having a clue what they meant and no one stopping us!

As a student, I wore big black DM’s with thick woolly tight and tiny lycra skirts. I protested and I danced and I spent my days studying beatnik literature.  I adored, U2 and Simple Minds then slightly later James and The Waterboys and I spent hours dancing at Nottingham’ Rock City and Irish Club. Oh, they were happy, emotional, intense, endless days of growing up.

I was completely head over heels in love with a very handsome boy called Paul who had lovely long hair and who made me weak at the knees. He didn’t love me back and it made my heart sad. He played me JJ Cale over and again. I never got over him.

Was Music Really Better When We Were Young? Was love?

My first ever CD in my mid teens was Candi Staton and the Soure…You got the Love.  I still get hugely moved by that song and I always have to get up and dance!

Ah, memories. memories of cheesy school discos right through to nights out clubbing at Uni, Songs to revise by (I liked the Beautiful South for that) and songs to kiss too (I’m not sharing that!)

I remember all that music so well because I think they are such a profound time in your life. You are changing and growing and finding your own identity and friends and music is the soundtrack the backdrop to that.

I am no musician I can’t tell you if music is better today in quality than it was thern. I love Olly Murs and Rihanna…don’t like rap music (because I rarely get the lyrics) and I love ,love LOVE Adele.  But it’s not ‘my music’ ….do you know what I mean. I know you do. You will have ‘your music too’. Its all nostalgia. My granddad used to say music was better in his day too and really he meant it was filled with memories so much more precious from his ‘day

Many holiday companies such as Richardson’s  now offer special music nights for us ‘older people’ celebrating the pop music of their youth. That makes me sound ancient! . You can find out more information on the special music nights on offer at Richardsons by clicking here

I think it would be such a laugh to round up some friends from that time when music meant so much to me and have a night relieving some special memories  and having a good old dance. its been a very long time since I had a good dance and it always makes you happy doesn’t it! There’s nothing quite like reliving your youth!

Mind you I quite fancy the idea of a Rock n Roll weekend too and that’s definitely not my era!

Was Music Really Better When We Were Young? Yes of course it was
