For most of us, taking care of our health is one of our major priorities. This is why we strive to live healthier, eat better, and do our share of exercising in whatever way we can. But there are times when we or our loved ones may get sick; sickness is, after all, unavoidable sometimes, even when we try our best to prevent it. At times like these, we obviously want to have the best medical care possible.
In the UK, we are lucky enough to have universal health care. But despite this, more and more individuals are getting private medical insurance, or PMI, simply because they would like to have access to faster healthcare and private treatment for various conditions. Would you really want to be on a long waiting list if you had a medical condition that needed attention right now?
You need not worry about your loved ones’ health with the proper PMI such as AXA PPP healthcare plans
But choosing the right PMI can be a bit of a challenge. This is where research goes a long way. If you have a better idea of what to expect and what kind of coverage PMI can give you, then you should be able to make the right decision.
Coverage for PMI
If you are looking at a standard PMI plan, then you could expect it to cover essential medical treatments, which include consultations, surgery, as well as hospital and nurse care. A more comprehensive policy, however, would include additional benefits such as personal accident cover and even complementary medicine. It is important for you to sit down with a provider so they can give you a broader idea of the types of coverage they offer.
Two types of private medical insurance
There are basically two types of private medical insurance plans: fully underwritten and moratorium. If you choose a fully underwritten policy, it may require you to divulge your full medical history so the insurance company will know what to cover and what not to cover. A moratorium policy, on the other hand, would simply give you blanket exclusions on some pre-existing conditions that go back several years. Moratoriums are obviously cheaper than fully underwritten policies, especially since there is a risk that any condition that comes out afterwards may not be covered if an exam proves that it began during the moratorium period.
PMI limitations
Keep in mind that PMI has certain limitations as well. For instance, it doesn’t usually cover accident and emergency treatments. Those would be covered by NHS services, however. Another limitation comes from the fact that you may not have unconstrained choices as to who will treat you or where you will be treated. A policy will usually give you a list of accredited hospitals and treatment centres. A higher premium will give you a more extensive list as well. Additionally, if you have to see a specialist who charges higher than the coverage, you may have to make up the remaining balance of the fee yourself.
Insurance companies like AXA provide AXA PPP healthcare plans that may be adapted to all your medical needs and requirements. At the end of the day, it is always better to get PMI for your own peace of mind. You never know when you or your family members may need it.
