The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips Review

My children have been reading Michael Morpurgo’s books ever since they could read by themselves. Schools highly rate these books and they are always on the class reading lists. Both my children have loved Michael’s books and they were very excited when I said I was about to read one for the very first time.

‘Which one do you have’ they asked enthusiastically.  ‘Adolphus Tips’ I said and they both went a bit dreamy eyed. ‘Oh it”s lovely,’ they both said. ‘I bet you cry!’

Oh my goodness they were right.

Take a look at what I thought….

Oh how I loved this book.

It was an absolute  pleasure to read and it transported  me completely to a different time and place. It was such a moving book and yet a fabulous, interesting snapshot of a moment in our history too, it really bought it to life.

I was glad my children had both read this book and now better understood the world their Great Grandma had grown up in. Adolphus Tips depicts a world of close communities and farm life that is so far from my children’s suburban sheltered life. It shows you a world of missing men, generations living together, evacuees and American soldiers; a world filled with uncertainly and fear and close, important relationships.

I feel that along with the facts of war and our social history my children now also understand a bit more about how it felt to lose and love during wartime, to miss family, to cope with relocation and to survive huge loss and live with fear.

Such an important book that captures the impact of war on an ordinary life.

Above all this book is a tale of friendship and survival between a girl and her cat and a girl and a boy.

A tale beautifully told.

The ending of this book made my heart sing and oh the tears flowed again. I don’t want to give away the story but the ending is rather wonderful and unexpected.I will most definitely be reading more of Michael Morpurgo’s books.

My daughter told me she adored this book and had read it many times. She said she felt she had learned so much from reading it. And throughout the story she felt happy and sad and surprised too.

Here’s what else she had to say  in her The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips Review

I felt just the same.

You should read it too and definitely introduce these books to your kids.

I got to ask Michael a question!

How lucky am I ..I got to ask Michael a question!

Question: Out of all the books you have ever written which one do you feel most proud of and why?

Answer: All of my books are very precious to me, they’re all babies if you like, so it’s very hard to pick one I am most proud of. But if I had to name one it would probably be War Horse. It’s my wife’s favourite and that matters a lot even though it was first published in 1982 and I’ve written many, many books since then.

(Isn’t that a lovely answer! War Horse if the one I am going to read next now!)
