Credit Score basic info

A credit score is a number (usually between 300 and 850) that represents your creditworthiness — how likely you are to repay borrowed money. Lenders, landlords, insurers, and even some employers use it to assess financial responsibility.

📊 Key Ranges (FICO Score)

  • 300–579 → Poor

  • 580–669 → Fair

  • 670–739 → Good

  • 740–799 → Very Good

  • 800–850 → Excellent

🧩 What Makes Up a Credit Score?

  1. Payment History (35%) – Paying bills on time is the biggest factor.

  2. Amounts Owed (30%) – How much debt you carry vs. your credit limits (credit utilization).

  3. Length of Credit History (15%) – Older accounts boost your score.

  4. Credit Mix (10%) – A variety (credit cards, loans, mortgage) helps.

  5. New Credit (10%) – Too many new applications can hurt your score.

💡 How to Improve Your Credit Score

  • Always pay bills on time.

  • Keep credit utilization below 30% of your available limit (under 10% is best).

  • Don’t close old accounts unless necessary.

  • Avoid applying for too many new credit lines at once.

  • Regularly check your credit reports (from Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) for errors.
