Top 5 UK Breaks on a Budget

Planning a break on a budget can be a difficult task, deciphering between what is good value for money and what simply is not.

Everyone has been there, browsing the internet at various discount websites looking for a good deal on a weekend away. When keeping to a budget, the chances are we look closer to home – generally, UK breaks are cheaper and don’t incur too much travel expense.

Luckily, we live in a country filled with stunning locations and beautiful countryside, so finding a break on a budget worth doing isn’t too much of a hard task. We look at five of the top locations for a budget weekend away.

London

Believe it or not, a weekend in London is manageable on a budget, although it is better if you book in advance as hotel and train prices can increase substantially.

Saving the pennies in London does mean that a trip to Oxford Street probably isn’t on the cards, but with so many sights and activities to do in the capital, shopping should be the last thing on your mind. Investing in a London Pass provides free entry to a number of attractions and tourist spots, and is available with a travel card.

If you have never been to London before, or have but never truly taken in the sights, then a couple of nights here is a must.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

South Wales is home to the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park – unique as it is the only national park to have been given the distinction on the basis of its coastline.

If a city break is not your idea of a break at all, this is definitely one to consider. The Welsh park offers cheap accommodation for almost a third of the price as you can expect to pay in West Country, as well as beautiful settings perfect for a hike through the woods or a romantic stroll along the beach.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park also offers a large slice of history at Carew Castle, with activities ranging from archery to ghost tours – something for the more adventurous of tourists.

Stourport-on-Severn

For a quaint weekend away by the river, Stourport-on-Severn is as good as any retreat on offer with the River Stour, River Seven and Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal all running through the quiet town.

There are activities aplenty along the riverside, such as boat rides, children’s play areas and putting greens. If the peace and tranquillity is not enough for you, across the bridge is Treasure Island Amusement Centre filled with plenty of excitement to keep you entertained for hours.

Located on the outskirts of Worcester, there is an abundance of greenery making the area a popular location for retirement homes and residential parks.

York

Yorkshire has always been one of the top locations for UK breaks due to its endless hills, fresh air and historical sites.

There is nothing like a walk through the Yorkshire Dales to really get away from the hustle and bustle of the working week. Enjoy the world in its simplest form away from busy roads and crowded shopping centres.

When travelling on a budget, York could be the perfect destination in terms of value for money, as you simply cannot put a price on watching the sunset over the countryside.

Liverpool

Music fans simply have to discover all that Liverpool has to offer, which is more than just one of the most famous football clubs in the world.

Arguably the music capital of the country, Liverpool is the birthplace of The Beatles, Elvis Costello and Gerry & the Pacemakers, with the Cavern Club its holy grail. Anyone who is anyone in the city’s music scene has performed and the famous venue – visiting it is a must to feel the famous Mersey vibe.

The 2008 European Capital of Culture encompasses large amounts of history, with numerous cost-friendly tours available in one of Liverpool’s museums and the Albert Dock, which houses various attractions.
