Planning an Italian road trip with kids

I have a only a few travel dreams with my family and most are fairly standard.

We want to go to Disney, we want  lots of center parc style holidays where we just hangout together in forests and chill and we want lot so fun sea and sand holidays. Lovely, relaxing stuff with a few water parks thrown in.

On a more adventurous level I would love for my kids  to see Europe with young, fresh and enthusiastic eyes. Italy in particular really floats my boat. I want them to see amazing art in tucked away churches, eat great food in simple little towns and see awe inspiring countryside and historical features as old as out first stories.

I have visited only once myself  and I was blown away by Italy. The riches on every corner of fountains and plazas,  we went on a shoestring but still saw riches everywhere and dined like kings.

I have a vision of us just rolling up at the airport and hiring a car in Italy and taking off map in hand. Free as the wind  for a few weeks exploration.

I know this could be tricky with kids, not quite planning out what to do, but it could also take you off the beaten track and be full of adventure. You just need a good detailed map, a hire car with GPS and some idea if where you want to go with some accommodation recommendation. Oh and you need a license of course!

Have you ever undertaken a road trip with kids somewhere amazing without a definite plan?  Would love to hear how you got on.

We love italy and have spent the last few summers there as my parents have a house in the mountains there (it even has a cave very cool!). The beaches in the south are awesome and perfect for kids – Paestum, Sapri, marina di Ginosa all beautiful fab food,, great wine, very cheap.. It is definitely worth steering clear of the touristy places when with children I think, although Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Rome, Capri etc are brill they are more adults only type places. Driving there is quite hair raising but make sure you get excess cover before go (icarhireinsurance were good for us) as otherwise you get stung even if someone prangs you!
