What Are You Going To Do With Your Career Now You Have Had A Baby?

If there is one thing that can turn your life on its head in more ways than one, it is having a baby. This little bundle of joy can cause you to look at your entire life differently. One area whereby changes often come about is your work life. For some people, they will go back to their previous job, work the same hours, and nothing changes. However, the reality is different for most mums. If you are trying to decide what to do with your career after having a baby, read on.

Do you want to follow the same career path you are on?

A lot of women end up having an epiphany while they are on maternity leave. They suddenly start to realise that their career is not the right path for them. There are a number of reasons why this can happen. Perhaps you have been bored and uninspired for a long time and it is only during this period of work that you have realised it? Maybe your new bundle of joy has sparked off new business opportunities in your mind and you want to pursue another path? No matter what applies, now is the best time to get real with yourself in figure out what you really want. Do not assume that you cannot change your career path at this stage in your life. Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, you can do everything from Master of Public Safety to Financial Services degrees online, so you can attain the qualifications you need while looking after your little on.

Will you need flexibility in your job?

Irrespective of whether you decide to stay in the same career or not, you need to figure out what sort of flexibility you are going to need. Talk to your partner to figure out what hours he is going to be available to look after the baby. You need to see whether your current hours can slot in this, with the assistance of family members if available. If not, you need to talk to your boss to see if you can work flexible hours. Be prepared to give back in order to receive. If you need to start work late, offer to stay later hours. Your boss is going to be much more likely to be flexible with your hours if you show dedication to your job.

How are you going to prepare for going back to work?

If you have decided to stay in your current job, you should arrange a chat with your boss so you can see what you have missed out on and how you are going to slot back in. You are likely to discover you have not missed much at all.  It is also a good idea to arrange to meet up with your co-workers as well, as a catch-up can help you feel more comfortable upon your return.
