Tips for healthy eating on a budget

  1. Shop strategically when healthy eating on a budget

One quick way to cut the cost of healthy eating is to shop strategically. Do your supermarket shop later in the evening when products are more likely to be reduced, or set time aside over the weekend to go to the market for your fresh produce. Markets offer competitive pricing, and are often much cheaper than supermarkets.

  1. Find alternative sources of protein

Meat is a great source of protein, but it can be pricey! If you think a big chunk of your budget is being spent on meat, opt for cheaper protein sources. Try having one or two meals a week using eggs, legumes or canned fish instead of meat.

Cooked lentils are also loaded with protein. Add them to meals, such as this Sri Lankan Sweet Potato and Green Bean Curry, for a cheap dose of protein that will bulk up your portions.

  1. Plan your meals ahead if you are healthy eating on a budget

Before doing your weekly shop, sit down with your family and plan your meals for the week ahead. Shopping with a meal plan in mind will help you to avoid waste, whilst involving your children is a great way to get them interested in healthy eating.

  1. Cook in bulk and freeze leftovers

Prepare large portions, and freeze the leftovers to give your food extra mileage. This is cost-effective, and can save you the time and effort of preparing meals from scratch every day.

  1. Healthy eating on a budget? Ditch the junk food

Junk foods such as pizzas, ready meals and snacks are loaded with unhealthy ingredients and can swallow up a great deal of your budget. Ditching the junk food not only saves money, but it’s much easier to resist temptation when treats aren’t readily available!

I keep it simple. I go to Costco and get ground beef, chicken and eggs and a big bag of frozen veggies. I try and prep some meals on Sunday so I’m not cooking every single night.
